Deck Cadet Training for OOW Leading to Australian CoC

Phase I Pre-Sea Training Programme


A 4-month pre-sea course aimed to provide the students with basic entry-level knowledge in the maritime field as well as to prepare the students to serve as a cadet officer on board a merchant ship.

This phase shall include the teaching of the following subjects:

a) English Language & Standard Marine Communication Phrases

b) General Ship Knowledge and Safety

c) Monitor Compliance with Legislative Requirements

d) Plan and Conduct a Passage and Determine Position

e) Electronic Aids to Navigation

f) Safe Working Practices aboard merchant ships

g) Seamanship

h) Watch-keeping and Collision Regulations


In addition, the Phase I of this course will also include the four modular courses as required by STCW ’2010 manila amendments namely Personal Survival Techniques, Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting, Elementary First Aid & Personal Safety and Social Responsibility & Security Training for Seafarer with the designated security duties.

Upon successful completion of this phase, students will be given a CTD issued by IMETA and OSA.


Phase II Shipboard Attachment Programme


During this period, the students must complete minimum 24 months’ sea service as deck cadets (subject to amendments, if any, made by AMSA) on board commercial trading ships of 500GT or more. This sea service of 24 months must include at least 6 months of bridge watch keeping duties in a capacity that fully understudies the officer of the watch. Additionally, they will also be required to complete:


a) A preparatory correspondence course (hereinafter DLP).

b) An International Shipping Federation Training Record Book (hereinafter TRB)

The completion of the TRB & DLP shall form an integral part of the overall criteria making the student eligible for the Phase III.


Phase III: Certificate of Competency (CoC) Class 3 Deck Preparatory Course 

A 10-month preparatory course conducted in Australia at our partner college and leading to the students being awarded the Australian Class 3 Deck (Unlimited) CoC, provided they satisfy all the assessment and any other criteria for the above.
